Etching
Custom Etched Nameplates
Custom etched nameplates feature recessed designs that are highly durable and resistant to wear, making them difficult to damage or deface. The etching process uses a chemical method to permanently mark the surface of the metal with precise, high-detail designs.
This process involves applying an acid-resistant coating to selected areas of the metal while exposing others to a mordant (acid). The acid removes material from the exposed areas, creating recessed graphics. The longer the exposure, the deeper and more pronounced the design becomes.
Once the desired depth is achieved, the plate is removed and neutralized. The protective coating is then stripped away, and ink can be applied to enhance visibility and add color to the design.
Common materials used for etched nameplates include stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and bronze. Etching is one of the most durable marking methods available, as the design is physically embedded into the metal surface.
Etched nameplates are ideal for applications exposed to harsh environments, where long-term readability and durability are essential.
